Australia and New Zealand have been my beat for over twenty years. Actually, I first fell in love with New Zealand when I visited during the summer break from my teaching job. The moment I stepped off the plane I knew I'd arrived in a very special place. I don't know if it was the smell of the freshly-washed air, the sight of the smiling Customs agent, or the sound of the Kiwi accent, but I had the sense of having come home. I've since been back a couple of dozen times, written four books about the country, conducted tours of it, and spoken to myriad audiences about this very special part of the world - and every time I step off the plane in Auckland I still have the same sense of coming home. I also visited Australia on that first trip, but it was a short stop and I didn't make the same emotional connection with this larger, more complex nation. Actually, it wasn't until I researched the first edition of Frommer's Australia that I really felt like I knew "Oz", as the locals refer to their home.
I married photographer Richard Adams in 1989 and together we roam the globe creating story/photo packages for magazines, researching book projects - and generally having a great time. And yes, I do realize how lucky I am. (For more information on our stock photography see www.ElizabethHansen.net, www.agpix.com/adamshansen and www.photosourcebook.com/1924), I wrote my first book, The Woman's Travel Guide To New Zealand, in 1984 and followed that with Bed & Breakfast New Zealand - for which I won a Lowell Thomas Award. Then I was selected to write the first-ever comprehensive guide to Australia in the Frommer series. (That was the book that required the "boot camp" research trip mentioned above.) I revised Frommer's Australia three times and also wrote a brand-new Frommer's Australia From $50 A Day. I also took over Frommer's New Zealand From $50 A Day and authored two editions of this title. I also wrote a couple of editions of Frommer's San Diego, and contributed the San Diego chapters to Frommer's California, Frommer's California From $60 A Day, and Frommer's USA.
